Planning to launch
The Business
Gut Check
Why do you want to start this business?
*
I'm not totally sure. I just know I want something different.
Mostly to make more money or get out of my job.
I have my reasons, but I haven't put them into words.
I can tell you exactly why, and it's bigger than the money.
If your business were working the way you want two years from now, what would your life look like?
*
I haven't really thought about it.
I know the income I'd like, but not much beyond that.
I have a general picture: my hours, my income, how I'd spend my time.
I can describe it clearly, including what I'm willing to trade to get there.
If someone at a dinner party asked what you'll sell and what it costs, what would you say?
*
Honestly, I'm not sure yet.
I know the general area, but not the specific offer.
I can describe the offer, but I haven't set a price.
I can tell them who it's for, what they get, and the price.
Who is your business for?
*
Anyone who needs what I do.
A general group, like "women" or "small business owners."
I know the type of person and the problem she has.
I've talked with people like her, and I know what she needs in her own words.
Which of these is closest to where you are?
*
Nothing's set up yet.
I've picked a business name.
I have a name, and I know which legal structure I need.
I've registered the business and opened a separate bank account.
How much do you know about what it will cost to start and run your business?
*
I haven't looked into it.
I have a rough guess.
I've listed my startup costs.
I know my startup costs, my monthly costs, and what I need to bring in to cover them.
If you opened for business tomorrow, how would people find out?
*
I wouldn't know where to start.
I'd post on social media and hope.
I'd tell friends and family and ask them to share.
I have a list of people to reach out to and a plan for where I'll show up.
How do you feel about being the face of your business?
*
Honestly, it makes me want to hide.
I'll do it, but it's uncomfortable.
I'm mostly comfortable. I just don't know what to say.
I'm ready to put myself out there.
Someone says, "I think I need what you offer. How does this work?" What happens next?
*
I'd freeze.
I'd explain everything and hope she says yes.
I'd suggest a call, but I don't have a process for it.
I'd book a conversation, ask what she needs, and know how to make an offer.
Once someone says yes, how would you deliver your service?
*
I haven't thought that far.
I know what I'd do, but nothing's written down.
I have the basic steps sketched out.
I know how I'd onboard her, deliver the work, and get paid, contract included.
Almost done. A couple of quick reflections, then your results.
A year from now, if your business were working exactly the way you want, what would be different?
How soon are you looking to make a change?
*
Now
In the next 3 months
I'm just exploring
